Meet our School for 2013 SCHOOL SUPPLY PROGRAM

Meet our School for 2013 SCHOOL SUPPLY PROGRAM

Within Bouake (the second largest city in the Ivory coast) is “EPP Dar Es salaam School” named after the neighborhood which it is located in. The EPP Dar Es salaam students are treated to the sight of French and United Nations peace keepers who currently reside in the city as part of an enforced cease fire between the rebel-held north and the government-held south. A stark reminder of the terrors of a war just ended and the potential for it to flare up again.

Though the city is the nation’s second largest community and the commercial and transportation hub of the interior it is an impoverished area set by Western Standards.

Governmental Education funding was re routed during the battle to support the armed forces. The schools of Bouaka were under attack and some were turned into outposts for the military. As example : International Christian Academy (ICA) which was an American boarding school fell under attack and the children were trapped at the school for a week by fighting between government soldiers and rebels opposed to President Laurent Gbagbo. Eventually they were evacuated unharmed by French troops to government held Yamoussoukro. Some of the students and staff then relocated to Dakar Academy in Senegal in order to complete the school year. The ICA campus in eastern Bouaké was then used as a French military base in rebel-held Côte d'Ivoire.

EPP Dar Es salaam School is standing in the rubble calling to the next generation of Bouake children to “come... get an education... and work towards a new hope for a peace filled and self sustained future.” UAA is standing right beside them to ensure that the tools needed (Books, pens, paper etc...) are in at least 500 children’s hands.

“We have heard of accounts,”‘ say’s Jessica Bintou Diomande (President of UAA) , “ where children have come to school for a short while but dropped out because their parents could not afford the supplies. Then when UAA staff brought “School Supply Kits” these children came back and were full time attendees.”

The Kits are $40.00 and include:
